Here’s a Christmas song. I wrote it at the end of October… literally the end of October… like October 31st. I planned to record it with a piano part and maybe some bells… and procrastinate and finesse and minutiae… and recent events… So, I didn’t really get that done… Finally, I just put on my little Santa hat and decided to play it on my acoustic guitar and sing it.

Christmas isn’t always a joyous time. Sometimes it’s a little melancholy and sad… sometimes the overwhelming commerciality of it makes you feel like a rube.

I don’t want to be a Scrooge. It’s wonderful that we take time at the coldest, darkest time of year to spend time with our loved ones… and make memories… and repeat our rituals.

Well, you know that I’ve been drinking – and you know that I’m not all right
But if you get home before I’m too far gone, we can watch “It’s A Wonderful Life”

Yeah, I get like this Christmas – I Blame it on the flashing lights
And the baby Jesus and the Santa Claus and the fact that everybody’s so nice

But I hate the snow, and I hate the bells
Just want to sit alone and listen to Elvis sing “Blue Christmas”

And I don’t want to go, to the family Christmas show
going through the motions – trying to feel emotion.

When you bought my Christmas present – I hope it was on sale
The economy will not collapse, if you didn’t pay retail

Shopping, shopping, Christmas shopping
Christmas mania, Christmas morning
Shopping, shopping, Christmas shopping
All the stores are open later…
Stick a chicken in a duck – stick that duck inside a turkey
eat it up, still not enough… we want more… we want more…

I hate the snow, and I hate the bells
Just want the Pogues and Kristy MacColl to sing “Fairytale of New York”

Well, you know that I’ve been drinking – and you know that I’m not all right
But if you get home before I’m too far gone, we can watch “It’s A Wonderful Life”

Who knows what anyone wants...
