A little explanation about the process.

I didn’t really have a set plan… at some point when I was thinking about making videos (a few months ago) I had the idea that i’d like to create some sort of spontaneous drawing to accompany a song… the idea was to have an image in mind and create it with the song as a soundtrack… i figured i would just do screenshots of the piece a it progressed and “fit” the stream of screenshots together to the music – so not actually “drawing to the music” – more like, as i said before, add a soundtrack to a time lapse recording of the creative process.

But when I was trying to come up with a piece to do next – and inititially thinking of a different song and a different concept all-together – I started messing around with an open source screen capture program (CamStudio), my Wacom tablet and Corel Painter Sketch Pad.

I realized that i could capture a sound playing on my computer and my on-screen activity at the same time – as a video – in real time…

After a couple of test runs and choosing a likely song – I was still trying to come up with an image that i would try to complete by the end of the song…

Then I did the drawing that you see in the video – no set image in mind, i just started drawing – reacting in the moment – to the lyrics and thoughts i was having while listening to the song…

I think that the process allowed me to remove my internal censors and to access a more direct response to the song (psycho babbling artsy type…heh!)

The drawing isn’t so mush about a finished piece of art as it is a process and a documentation of the process… as it was occurring…(Lord knows that i’m a bit embarrassed by the drawing… don’t want it to be taken as an example of my “artwork” – or maybe i do)

Anyway… hope this doesn’t take the fun out of it for you… just some thoughts and explanation…
