A song I wrote on November 11, 2010… it began as a thing in my journal.

I have been “journaling” on a regular basis for many years now – can’t count… but every now and them I look back through some of them… stretching back to 1988 and further.

I “mine” for songs and art ideas in those journals.

But, as I was saying, I wrote Burn in Me on that day in my journal…utilizing a stream of consciousness method of getting words on a page which I’ve sort of developed over all those years of journaling (it’s one of the “modes” of writing I use when I journal). Over the next week I massaged the words a bit (not too much… stayed very close to the original ). I played my guitar over the words and sang them out loud and a song took shape.

I’m not entirely sure what it’s “about” (Well I know what it’s about for me – I think :)– but I also really hate explaining songs. I think that a song is a discovery and a gift to the person writing it down and pulling the bits together-and the song is the “thing”… everything is there in the song. The song is “finished” when it goes into someone’s ears and they process something… and meaning comes about (and maybe it’s different for everyone hearing it). (I know there are plenty of songs I have loved over time because I thought they were about something I decided it was about)

I recorded the song pulled together some sort of (weird 🙂 visuals and “released” the song and video on YouTube, a week later, on November 18 (You can see that I’m looking at the lyrics as I lip sync in the video… because they were still so new to me and not memorized :).

Songs grow over time… they grown up and find their “voice” … this one changed a little as I played it over the years. So, I decided to record a “live” (guitar and vocals with foot triggered accompaniment – played by me earlier 🙂 version of it for an episode of the TheSteveCastonShow in December 2014.

Anyway… hope that’s sort of interesting or something. Here are both versions for your perusal:

Here’s the original recording from 2010

Here’s the 2014 version – go to 1:24 to skip the little weird intro thing… or if you want to hear some backward talking played backwards… play it from the start 🙂
